RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOL
At Clavering Primary School, children’s rights are at the heart of all we aim for.
We provide a welcoming, safe and inclusive environment where everyone is respected and learning is valued. We have high expectations in all areas and work towards developing confident, successful, determined and well-rounded children.
After our successful accreditation in April 2022, we are now officially recognised as a Unicef UK Silver: Rights Aware school. We are continuing on our journey to achieve the final stage of the Rights Respecting Schools Award, Gold: Rights Respecting.
Achieving Silver: Rights Aware means there is evidence that:
- Our school is explicitly embedding the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in its policy, practice and culture.
- We are promoting knowledge and understanding of the Convention throughout your school community.
- We are putting into action and developing the plans outlined on our Action Plan for Silver.
- We are beginning to see the positive impact of these actions on children and young people, staff, and on the school’s ethos, practice and environment.
- Our children are beginning to see themselves as rights respecting global citizens and advocates for fairness and children’s rights, both locally and globally.
We are now going for Gold: Rights Respecting, which is the final stage of the Rights Respecting School Award. We have an Action Plan for Gold in place which prioritises our areas for development and identifies actions for each of the RRSA strands.
At Clavering Primary School, we teach children the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) (https://www.unicef.org.uk/what-we-do/un-convention-child-rights/) through our curriculum and within the school community. We learn about rights, through rights and for rights.
UNICEF is the world’s leading organisation for children and their rights. In 1989, governments across the world promised all children the same rights by adopting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The basic needs that should be met so children and young people grow up to reach their full potential are enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The rights are international law. Most of the countries in the world have signed to make this domestic law in their country. These rights describe what a child needs to survive, grow, and live up to their potential in the world. They apply equally to every child, no matter who they are or where they come from. All children have rights, even those affected by conflict or emergencies. There are 53 articles (rights) in the convention.
At Clavering Primary School, we work hard to plan events and activities which encourage our pupils to recognise their rights and the rights of others, both in school and beyond.
Class Charters
Every class has a child rights-based charter or agreements to support a positive learning environment for children in the classroom. Our class charters help to make the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) more prominent and relevant. The charters not only provide an opportunity to learn about specific articles from the CRC, but helps to establish and build shared values and relationships for creating a rights respecting ethos in the classroom and across a school context.
Rights Respecting Bear
Each class from Reception to Year 2 has a Rights Respecting bear. The children take their class bear home with them and make sure they enjoy their rights. A copy of the CRC is sent home with the bears. Families are then encouraged to share photographs of their rights being respected via Class Dojo.
